From The Morning Call -- January 19, 2005
It's more than Easton-Nazareth to Crowell

By Gary R. Blockus
Of The Morning Call

If today's expected snow proves to be just a nuisance, it's the perfect way to set a tension-filled stage of scholastic wrestling for tonight.

Some of the premier matchups of the season will take place tonight with Nazareth hosting Easton drawing the main spotlight at 7:30 p.m.

Elsewhere, Freedom (10-4, 2-2 LVC) will host Northampton (8-3, 3-1) in another big Lehigh Valley Conference meet while Wilson (7-2, 6-1) travels to Northwestern (10-3, 7-1 Colonial) for what amounts to the battle for second place in the Colonial League, as well as seeding-spot status for District Duals.

However, Easton (9-0, 4-0) at Nazareth (9-2, 3-0) is for all the marbles in the LVC, and just about everyone is picking Easton to win the big match.

''It's a league championship match,'' said Easton coach Steve Powell. ''There's certainly no doubt that Nazareth and Nazareth fans would love to win it and that Easton and Easton fans would love to win it. You don't need a pep talk for a Nazareth-Easton match.''

But this one is about more than two top teams.

For the first time in his life, Nazareth coach Dave Crowell will find himself in the opposite corner of his son, Dave, Jr., the Easton 171-pounder.

''I will not, during his bout, coach against my son,'' the elder Crowell said, ''but I will be watching with the love for your own son that goes beyond wrestling … You don't know what those matchups are going to be. To be totally honest, it would be very, very hard for me to be completely unbiased in that one.''

Because of the familial conflict, Nazareth assistant coaches Adam Colombo, Shawn McEntire and Darren Danner will be in charge of juggling with tonight's Nazareth lineup. And there's plenty of room to juggle.

''We don't talk about it,'' Crowell the coach said of he and his son's objectives for this evening. ''I don't ask him; he doesn't ask me.''

''It's certainly a situation that I think only Dave can explain how tough it is,'' Powell said. ''I know how it was for [my assistant] Barry [Snyder] and his son Bryan [who wrestled for Easton], but that's a whole different animal just coaching your son. Coaching against your son, that's a whole different challenge. The nature of wrestling is such a commitment that when your son comes home, he wins, he loses, you do it with him. It makes it a challenge enough as a parent, and then to coach against your own son …''

Which is the big reason Crowell, Sr. will stop being the Nazareth coach for six minutes, and instead, just be a father.

Here's a look at the potential matchups, although expect the lineups to get juggled quite a bit (Easton wrestlers are listed first. Wrestler's Morning Call ranking precedes their names):

103 — No. 1 Jordan Oliver (fr., 20-1) vs. Scott Rider (so., 10-10).
112 — Brandon Veres (so., 8-4) vs. No. 3 Andrew Flegler (jr., 17-5).

130 — No. 2 Josh Oliver (sr., 24-1) vs. No. 1 Tim Darling (so., 22-1) or Adam Counterman (so., 9-2) or Greck.
135 — No. 1 Alex Krom (sr., 22-1) vs. No. 4 Phil Santee (jr., 18-6) or Darling or Justin Cohen (so., 1-2).
140 — No. 3 Andrew Goldstein (sr., 19-3) vs. Santee (jr., 18-6) or A. Counterman.
145 — No. 5 Braylin Williams (jr., 16-5) vs. No. 1 Joe Caramanica (sr., 21-1).

189 — No. 2 Zach Pizarro (sr., 16-2) or Corey Rutt (3-3) vs. Ron Weaver (sr., 4-4).
215 — Kyle Snyder (4-13) or Pizarro vs. Tim Frey (sr., 12-10).
