Easton finishes second in Florida
Sunshine Invitational wrestling. Red Rovers Oliver, Dailey, Moore and Drummond win championships.
Sunday, December 10, 2006
FROM STAFF REPORTS
BRANDON, Fla. | Easton Area High School's wrestling team finished second Saturday in the National High School Coaches
Association's Sunshine Invitational.
Nationally-ranked Brandon, host of the inaugural event, won the team title with a total of 442½ points and
five individual champions.
The Red Rovers, ranked No. 22 in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News, claimed four titles and had 12 wrestlers
place in the top four to finish a distant second with 382½.
The 11-team tournament used a pool-bracketing system in which wrestlers accumulated individual tournament-style
points for their teams, rather than dual-meet scores being kept to determine the winning team.
The wrestlers with the best records in each pool advanced in the championship and consolation finals.
Easton winners included Desmond Moore (103), returning state champ Jordan Oliver (119), Ju-Ju Drummond (130) and
Colin Dailey (152).
"We learned a lot," Red Rovers coach Steve Powell said. "It gave our young guys a lot of early experience.
I like the format early in the season. It's set up to get each wrestler a good number of bouts."
Moore defeated Brandon's Terry Dawson 10-5 -- one of six head-to-head meetings between Easton and No. 9 Brandon
in the finals.
Oliver scored a 12-2 major decision over Brandon's Kyle Keller in the 119-pound final.
Brandon won the other four against the Rovers. Kegan Handlovic (112), Eric Burgey (145), Joe Piro (171) and Chris
Wilson (215) all finished second with losses to Brandon wrestlers in the finals.
Nationally-ranked Eric Grajales pinned Handlovic in 2:48 in their 112-pound final.
"Kegan went real well with him," Powell said. "Grajales is just more well-rounded at this point,
but Kegan went right with him. He was never out of it."
Grajales is ranked third in the country at 112 by AWN.
Drummond and Dailey each won close title bouts.
Drummond beat Keaton Thompson of Vestavia Hills 7-5 and Dailey held on for a 3-2 decision over Juniper Christian's
George Bancroft.
Mark Hartenstine (125), Tevin Gibson (140), Jeremy Snyder (160) and Storm Kruczek (189) placed fourth for the Red
Rovers.

Easton dominates early in Florida
Saturday, December 09, 2006
FROM STAFF REPORTS
BRANDON Fla. | Easton Area High School's wrestling team schooled its Florida counterparts on Friday.
The Red Rovers gave the Sunshine State a taste of Lehigh Valley wrestling -- mauling Wharton 45½-8 and Riverview
50-4 in the opening rounds of the National High School Coaches Association's Sunshine Invitational.
The inaugural event is being hosted by nationally-ranked Brandon High School. The 10-team tournament uses a pool-bracketing
system in which wrestlers earn tournament-style points for their teams.
"We had two matches (Friday) and we'll have two matches Saturday," said Easton coach Steve Powell, whose
Rovers accrued 17 pins, four technical falls and two majors while losing only three bouts on Friday.
"The kids in each pool with the best record will wrestle in the finals."
Easton wrestlers with two pins were Desmond Moore (103 pounds), Kegan Handlovic (112), Jordan Oliver (119), Ju-Ju
Drummond (130), Colin Dailey (152), Joe Piro (171) and Chris Wilson (215).
Freshman Mike Hartenstine (125) and sophomore Eric Burgey (145) each had two wins by technical fall.
South Dade, Plant, Atlantic, Jupiter Christian, Hillsborough -- all Florida schools -- and Vestavia Hills (Ala.)
are the other competing schools.
Easton will meet South Dade while Brandon faces Vestavia Hills at 10 this morning in the semifinals. The championships
and consolation finals begin at 6 p.m.
Powell expected a number of his wrestlers to go head-to-head with Brandon in the finals.
Powell said seniors Brandon Veres (125) and Jules Knighton, (160) and junior Cory Rutt (189) are not competing
this weekend.
Veres, who lost a wrestle-off with Hartenstine, has left the team to participate in indoor track, according to
Powell. The coach also said that Knighton and Rutt, both football players, are struggling to make weight under
the new hydration system.
