Rovers nearly perfect in Shawnee debut
Dominating performance earns praise from fans and satisfied coach.

FORKS TWP. | Saturday night's crowd at Shawnee Middle School -- the new part-time home of the Easton Red Rovers wrestling team -- rose in unison to applaud a close, satisfying win by the rapidly-improving Chris Wilson, then "oohed" and "ahhed" at the exploits of the electrifying Jordan Oliver.

Easton Area High School dominated its Lehigh Valley Conference dual meet with Parkland, 56-9, winning 12 of the 14 bouts and earning bonus points in nine matches.

Coach Steve Powell's Red Rovers finished off their first week of the season with the third of three impressive LVC victories.

The final win was before about 1,000 fans in the wrestling debut of the sparkling new 2,500-seat gym on the campus of the district's middle school.

"Our new house is nice," Powell, the longtime coach, said. "It was a good crowd. This place will be rockin' for Nazareth and Northampton and Phillipsburg. Our old high school gym is the best in the country for wrestling and this one can be the new best. Our school district should be proud."

The best bout of the night came at 215 pounds between Wilson and Parkland's Nick Irwin.

Wilson trailed 6-2 at the end of the first period and 13-12 with 30 seconds remaining. The junior, though, escaped with 25 seconds left and earned a takedown several seconds later to pull out a 15-13 decision.

"I was comfortable even though I fell behind because I saw his match against Nazareth and I saw he tired out at the end," said Wilson, who lost to Irwin as a freshman and sophomore. "I really don't know what happened at the end. It was just a big rush."

"I was more nervous," Oliver said, "for Chris' match than I was for my own."

Wilson improved to 3-0 this season and has shown improvement in every bout, according to Powell. "That was an awesome match," the coach said.

Oliver, as usual, put on an awesome display.

The two-time state champ tried to hit a leg cradle in the first 60 seconds of his 130-pound bout against Parkland's Zachary Cope and barely missed. Later in the period, he landed the leg cradle and turned it into an acrobatic pin.

"I did it a couple times last year," said the Oklahoma State-bound Oliver. "It's sort of a risky move but I felt like I could do. Maybe show off a little. I try to act classy, but I wanted to get the crowd going."

"It's Jordan," Wilson said. "He puts on a show every time out."

Other Red Rovers earning bonus points were Joey Rizzolino at 112; defending state champ Kegan Handlovic at 119; Mark Hartenstine at 125; Patrick Corpora at 130; Tevin Gibson at 140; Colin Dailey at 152; Jeremy Snyder at 160; and Storm Kruczek at 189.

"I told (assistant coach) Barry Snyder," Powell said, "in three matches we've improved immensely with very little practice time. That's very encouraging."

Powell confirmed 189-pounder Cory Rutt left the team late last week.

The Red Rovers' coach said he has not talked to Rutt, a senior who went 26-8 last year, since last week but isn't ruling out a possible return, either.

"There's always a chance," Powell said. "Expectations are pretty high here in the Lehigh Valley. I'm not sure if that's what got to him or not."
