Getting 'Handl' on irony EASTON 61, WILSON 12. Easton's Handlovic pins down 100th career victory against his old team. Saturday, January 05, 2008 By MICHAEL BLOUSE The Express-Times FORKS TWP. | Kegan Handlovic, the Easton Red Rovers state champion wrestler, could only smile and shake his head at the irony. "Actually, I started to figure everything out over the Christmas holiday," the senior said. When Handlovic realized his 100th career victory would likely come against the school he transferred from before his sophomore year -- Wilson Area High, "it was a complete shock, an amazing coincidence." The Red Rovers' standout 119-pounder won No. 100 in style Friday night, schooling Wilson freshman Brandon Mayberry with seven takedowns in the first minute. Handlovic then finished off his latest victim in 69 seconds and was one of Easton's six pinners in a 61-12 rout of the Warriors during the Easton Invitational at Shawnee Middle School. "It was cool I could do it in this match," said Handlovic, who is 14-1 this season after compiling a 45-3 record last season. "It made the match interesting. "I went to Wilson and I never even heard of the kid I wrestled tonight, so I didn't really know what to expect. I wanted to work some weight off for (Saturday) and then I wanted to get the fall for our team." Red Rovers veteran coach Steve Powell is impressed by his state champion's improvement over the past three seasons. "His 100 wins weren't easy wins, either," Powell said. "You can't beat any of his workout partners, (Jordan) Oliver, (Mark) Hartenstine and (Joey) Rizzolino. And our schedule's helped him improve, too." Handlovic, whose father, John, won a state title at Wilson, said his decision to transfer has worked out well academically and athletically. "It was big for me," he said. "I've made a complete turnaround. I like the school better and it's a different atmosphere in the wrestling room." Other featured bouts Friday night included Easton sophomore Mark Hartenstine's 10-1 major decision over D.J. Hartrum at 130 pounds and Patrick Corpora's pin of Mike Calantoni at 135. Hartenstine entered with a 13-1 record and Hartrum was 11-3. The Red Rover controlled the action with two first-period takedowns and late back points for the nine-point win. "I was looking forward to this one," Hartenstine said. "I've wrestled him a lot in the room but never in a match. I got a couple takedowns on my feet, which was big for me. I wanted those early points to help me get into the flow of the match." Corpora was on the verge of suffering a lopsided loss when a big third-period move changed the outcome. The Red Rovers junior, trailing 6-1, reversed Calantoni and clamped on a strong headlock, eventually working it for a fall in 5:06. "That's the neat thing about this sport," Powell said. "Regardless of the score, you're never out of a match." Easton pinners included Jordan Oliver (130), Colin Dailey (152), Jeff Griffith (171) and Chris Wilson (215). Oliver's victory was the 151st of his outstanding career. He is a two-time state champion. Freshmen Mike Fleck at 103 and Rizzolino at 112 both won by technical fall. Junior Jeremy Snyder also won by tech fall. Tevin Gibson and Eric Burgey won by decision back-to-back at 140 and 145. Both of Wilson's wins were by pin. Alex Depew started off the evening by decking Ryan Dech in 1:39 and Dennis Rhyder won at heavyweight with a fall in 2:36 over Steve Vas. Easton wrestles Pleasant Valley and Caesar Rodney (Del.) today in the second day of its invitational. (Five dual meets will be contested at one time.) The Red Rovers meet Pleasant Valley at 9 a.m.; and the showdown against Caesar Rodney is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. "It's a great event," Powell said. "It was nice to have both Phillipsburg and Liberty in our gym. Hopefully there's some more good wrestling (Saturday)." Sunday, January 06, 2008 By MICHAEL BLOUSE The Express-Times FORKS TWP. | Eric Burgey started the Easton Red Rovers' Saturday evening wrestling party at Shawnee Middle School with an exciting overtime decision. Tevin Gibson capped it with a surprising pin. From start to completion, Easton Area High School completely outclassed Caesar Rodney of Delaware in a runaway 57-6 rout. Coach Steve Powell's team won 12 of the 14 bouts and fought valiantly in its two losses. Kegan Handlovic (125), Mark Hartenstine (130), Gibson (140), Jeff Griffith (171) and Chris Wilson (285) all recorded pins for the 8-0 Red Rovers. Burgey, though, got the momentum going with a come-from-behind 7-5 overtime decision over Estephen Green at 145 pounds -- the evening's opening bout. Burgey became visibly upset after falling behind 5-2 but turned his anger into inspiration. The junior registered the tying takedown with 15 seconds remaining, then took his opponent down just 12 seconds into the overtime period. Green beat Burgey 9-5 last year. "I realized I needed to do something fast," Burgey said. "Actually I was getting pretty down on myself. I knew I needed to fix what I was doing wrong." "Eric's becoming one of those kids we count on," the coach said. The win seemed to spark the rest of the Rovers, whose only two losses of the evening were close calls. Delaware state champion Alex Meade earned a 7-4 decision over Colin Dailey at 152 pounds and Kyle Condon won 12-9 over Mike Fleck at 103. Powell was especially pleased with Storm Kruczek's 2-1 win over Kyle Castellon at 189 and Nick Slack's 8-4 decision over Kade Keily at 130. Slack's win came in his varsity debut. Another six-point victory for the Red Rovers came at heavyweight. Steve Vas earned the forfeit win when referee Tony Phillips called Caesar Rodney's Adrian Tucker for not using a mouthpiece. Tucker wears braces and Phillips said rules state wrestlers with braces are required to wear a mouthpiece. "I thought we wrestled really well," Powell said in a classic understatement. "We're showing great improvement." Gibson, a senior who is sometimes overlooked in Easton's loaded lineup, showed his upside with a pin of freshman Issah Meade in 3:47. Gibson improved to 14-4; Meade dropped to 12-7. "I felt like I had a little edge because I'm a senior with a lot more mat time," Gibson said. "I knew of him (Meade) through his brother (Alex Meade was briefly enrolled at Easton) and I'd seen him wrestle before. So I was pretty confident. "I'm definitely surprised by the (team) outcome. I feel like we're one of the top teams but Caesar Rodney's given us trouble before. I thought we wrestled really, really well." Easton defeated Caesar Rodney 37-25 last year.
