Calvin Daly contributes to Easton Area High School's 70-3 wrestling win over Wilson

The Express-Times
FORKS TWP. | At 6-foot and 124 pounds, the slender Calvin Daly is used to the quizzical stares he gets anytime
he steps onto the wrestling mat in his singlet.
But the rapidly improving Easton Area High School junior is proving to be anything but a joke.
Daly, at 125 pounds, contributed a major decision to the Red Rovers' 70-3 rout of Wilson on Friday at Shawnee Middle
School in the opening night of the Easton Invitational.
Easton improved to 3-1. Wilson is 4-6.
"It happens all the time ... everyone thinks I should be shooting jumpers," said Daly, an 11-3 winner
over Wilson's Brandon Mayberry. "But I've never even played basketball. I'm horrible at it. I love wrestling."
In his first season on the varsity team, Daly has compiled a 7-6 record and been competitive against most of his
competition.
"You would think he's pulling a lot of weight," Easton coach Steve Powell said, "but that's his
build. He had a real good summer and got some nice experience. Calvin's doing real well. He's learning what he
can do and finding out what he can't."
Daly said his height has its advantages and disadvantages.
"The leverage is good and my long arms and legs help me in certain situations," he said. "But depending
on who I'm wrestling, I've got to make sure I watch my head."
The Red Rovers won 13 bouts to Wilson's one on Friday, including a victory in the evening's featured match at 119
pounds.
Junior Mike Fleck decisioned previously undefeated junior Brandon Hartrum 8-1. Fleck dominated throughout, getting
a takedown and three near-fall points in the first period. Hartrum entered with a 13-0 record.
"Early in the season my confidence was down and I want to use this as a confidence-booster," said Fleck,
who is now 7-5. "I know what I'm capable of and I felt if I did what I can, I'd win this match."
Fleck beat Hartrum by technical fall at 103 pounds two seasons ago.
Easton scored bonus points with wins from Evan Disora at 103 pounds, Robbie Rizzolino at 112, Daly, Mitch Minotti
at 130, Joey Rizzolino at 135, Mark Hartenstine at 140, Anthony Minotti at 145, Solomon Sohn at 152, Zack Bambary
at 160, Jose Rotger at 171, Tyler Greene at 189 and Jalal Paige at 215.
Wilson's only winner was 285-pounder Francis Roscioli, who defeated Jacob Neve 7-3.
"We thought we'd have a little better showing in some bouts, probably," Warriors coach Tom Mertz said,
"but this is the toughest team we've wrestled. Pen Argyl is tough but Easton is a big dog in Triple-A. ...
You've got to crawl before you can walk."
The victory was the 801st in Easton wrestling history. The Red Rovers hit 800 with Wednesday night's 80-0 shutout
of Allen.
"It's all about the commitment of the whole community, some great coaches over the years and outstanding wrestlers
who put in the hard work," Powell said.
